Professor Fred Hollande

Fred Hollande

Prof Frédéric (Fred) Hollande is Head of the Department of Clinical Pathology at the University of Melbourne and group lead of the Plasticity, Heterogeneity and Tumor Microenvironment (PHANTOM) lab at the Collaborative Centre for Genomic Cancer Medicine.

Prior to this, he was Deputy Head of this Department from 2019-2022 and Academic Programs coordinator in the Department of Pathology from 2016-2018.

Fred obtained his PhD from the University of Montpellier (France) in 1994 and first came to Australia to work as a post-doc at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research than at the University of Melbourne Department of Surgery until October 1996.

He worked for several years as a senior research fellow with the National Centre for Scientific Research in Montpellier, France, where he co-founded a start-up company to enable the translation of some of his research findings towards clinical applications. He moved to Australia in 2012 to take up a Teaching and Research position at the University of Melbourne.

Over the years, his group has made substantial contributions to the analysis of cell/cell communication and cell signalling during tumour progression. He is also recognised for his work in the analysis of mechanisms that regulate cancer stem cells, including the first experimental demonstration that stem-like cell function is preserved within circulating tumour cells during tumour progression.  More recently his group has made several contributions to the analysis of mechanisms that underpin tumour heterogeneity and treatment resistance in colorectal, pancreatic and other cancers.

Fred’s research group develops innovative and clinically relevant disease models using patient-derived tumour samples, combining genomic and functional analyses of these samples to advance knowledge of complex tumours and to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets in colorectal and pancreatic cancers.

Fred also has an extensive experience in teaching curriculum development, student mentoring and research training, through various roles as subject coordinator and academic program coordinator in the Department, and as academic lead of an international research training group within the university.
